  1.  @ThriftyGamerG  that's because of years of russification under russian empire and the soviet union. Almost entirety of Ukraine spoke Ukrainian originally, even 100 years ago. Except Crimea and Odesa. They spoke tatar there.

  2. No, Rus isn't russia. It's proto-Ukrainian state. And it's spelled Kyiv, both now and in the First Chronicle back then. There was no russia before moscow tsardom. The people are not the same and never were, despite some overlap. Rus is spelled with a single s.
