I dunno if the last part "the tactical mistake" of Paulus is really a mistake in the moment of the day. 1) ´Kotluban was failing "obviously" ´....how can Paulus be sure there wasnot a FOLLOW up in the sleeves of the soviets ? As a overall commander he is RESPONSIBLE to look FURTHER ahead than just the effects of a couple of days. If there WERE to be another massive assault from the north , he better be prepared...and shifting unist from south to north..would take half a week. 2) In contrast..reports of the status of the soviet defenders in the south by the germans would be MORE correct in that ; yes they were "stiff" , but also that there are FEW soviet men doing the stubborn defense. A good and STOUT german commander would have to be ABLE to prep up his men and overrun the few soviets there. 3) how are we to know or not to known if the germans in the Elevator area were NOT ALL involved in the stubborn fights so far ? Maybe Paulus realized that there was more fighting capability there of sofar INACTIVE units (the 267th ?)..all they needed was a kick in the butt !

also.. a lesser attack force around the Elevator would at worst mean a "delay of 1 or 2 days" of cleaning out the area. In contrast..lacking the essential defense power against another Kotluban MASSIVE attack, would at worst mean; TOTAL penetration and thus TOTAL loss of ARmy Stalingrad !!! and maybe..more probably..the germans did NOT "just" lose 100 men KIA over the ENTIRE Kotluban offensive combination. Despite defense benefits and well placed MG , and air superiority..a MOVING defense into attack MUST lead to more casualties!
