@RonaldDCass we already have 30 acres in northern Minnesota. We have a septic system and electric run to where we want to build, but there's the problem. She wants a dream house. I want something affordable and something we can build. I see reality, but can't get her to realize we are too old for the "dream house". She may out-live me, but why waste the time we do have?

Let Kyle do it his way. If he does it for a sleeping aid, so be it.
2
Welder's blankets are either Kevlar or fiberglass, both of them are fireproof.
2
Looks like you had a good time! Trying to be spring. I know the frost is coming up. Everything is turning to mud! That's springtime in Minnesota! Be safe on the lakes, never know how thick the ice is this time of year. Keep an eye on the weather, rain and snow mix coming! Montana and North Dakota got hit hard earlier this week. I don't know how much we'll get in northern Minnesota. Be safe and have a good day!
2
Looking very comfortable! If I can build my off-grid cabin I want to have a camping on demand water heater for the shower and other hot water needs. It would only be limited by the supply tank size and propane availability. There are other possibilities for hot water supply. But your system works for your needs. Great job! A porch roof is a good idea. I understand why you held off adding it. Prices are looking better now. I always look forward to seeing your progress! You're a smart hard worker that doesn't waste time or effort. Take care and be careful! See you soon for the updates!

I think it's wonderful! Looks like something I could live with. Doesn't have to be fancy shmancy for me. Handmade is more my style. Craftsmanship is hard to find nowadays! You've got it, my friend! I understand what you mean when you say "winter six months of the year". I'm also in northern Minnesota. They say we have 4 seasons. True, but spring, summer, and fall have to fight for the other six months! LOL! You're so driven to follow your dreams. You're such an inspiration! Don't EVER let anyone mess with that! I'm with you on that! Dream big and do whatever it takes to achieve your goals! My Dad used to tell me that, but I fumbled the ball somewhere. I'm trying to recover and find you as an inspiration! Thanks for sharing your projects! Keep the videos coming! Love seeing your progress!

Great job Kyle! Bummer that tree took a dump on your old outhouse. That's okay. His brothern filled the needs for the replacement building materials.
2
I'll tell you what you need, Kyle. Exactly what you're doing! Minimal distractions makes for better living. Focus on what you are doing and forget about the outside world. Not the outdoor world, just the world that doesn't understand you. You're doing what I wish I would've done 20 years ago. I understand northern Minnesota. That's where I'm at. Regrettably not off-grid. This weather is horrible on modern conveniences. The CV axel blew out in my truck and the charging system in my wife's Yukon is having issues. I'm still digging away at the snow in our area. Good luck to you! May God watch over you and bless all your efforts! Merry Christmas to you, Ciera and Skeeter. And your little kitty.
2
My wife likes to go camping, but our 19' camper isn't big enough anymore. Off-gridding is out of the question. She's an outdoor girl, but not into off-grid living.
2
@retiredyeti5555 in winter Minnesota feels like Canada! lol!
2
Hoo Rah! Looking great! Between you and your dad, you are doing a great job together! Of course, Cierra is doing a great job documenting your progress with the video. Dogs seem to be entertaining themselves. Looks like everyone is having an all around good time! Hard work, but you make it look easy. A lot of forethought went into this project, I can tell. Nobody should tell you that you are doing it wrong! Let's see if they are doing better on their projects. Hmmm? You, my friend get a big thumbs up from me!👍 Dad, you too! 👍 I'm feeling the victory with you! Great job! I look forward to seeing your next video!

Cold air settles to the bottom. Heat rises, Dude!
1
That was a great trip! I'm not physically able to do that kind of thing anymore because of my MS, but I can certainly enjoy your adventure! Before my MS my wife and I went camping and fishing a lot! Never did make it to the Boundary Waters. Heard a lot about them but never went. Watching you I know I couldn't do it. I did enjoy your video! Keep that girl! She's a lot like my wife! Can't stop her from getting things done and having a good time with it! Great video!
1
Sadly, most careers require a college degree to even be considered. Because I can't stand for long with my MS and don't have a college degree, I can no longer work.
1
@thedjc100 yeah, they won't even consider 25+ years working in a shop (working from work orders) good enough to be a service writer.
1
You did good moving that mini house. I guess it's a good thing you didn't have a big 4x4 truck to pull it with. It would've been buried to the axles! I know all about the northern Minnesota spring time. Spring is mud season. Cold and windy for a few days then a bit warmer but still a bit breezy. We're trying to get our new house started soon, too. I hope 2021 goes better than 2020 did! Got NOTHING done last year. Somebody even came out to our property and pulled all the grade stakes out I had for the house location. Surprised me. Evidently they didn't hear us out there firing our AR's the week before that. Hope your projects go smooth with rewarding results! I'm looking forward to seeing you build. Good luck to you!
1
You two are doing a great job with the homestead! Moving right along! Bathroom inside the house will be a great advantage in the winter time. Flooring looks great. Water catchment will be very advantageous for your gardening. A lot easier than your "water truck". lol! It will be great when you get to install the cabinets you got with all the salvage items from the resort. Hooking up the solar panels and getting power in the house is going to make it even more like home for you two. Great job on the video! Always looking forward to seeing your updates!

@KYLESCABIN a journey of 1000 miles starts with just one step!
1
He said right in the video he's in northern Minnesota.
1
We do what we do because we are who we are!
1
@noyopacific I'm in northern Minnesota, too. I've been looking back at my home state of Ohio. 20 degrees cooler here, but still no frost!
1
I've been following you on your channel for quite a while now. You've impressed me with all the things that you have done to have what you have. We (my wife and I) have property in northern Minnesota, too. She doesn't want to go off-grid, but she doesn't want all the bills. I'm trying to convince her that it's something we can do and still be comfortable. I'm an old Boy Scout and I'm pretty good at working with my hands. You could say that I'm a jack of all trades. What I don't know I research and look up videos on YouTube. You're living the good life! It's not an easy life, but a very good one! Just had to let you know that you've got my respect! Thanks for sharing your story with us! Keep on keeping on! P.S. I'm glad to see that you don't complain about any bad commenters or people trying to tell you what to do. That drives me crazy with some other YouTube channels. You do you and forget about the world! Good job!
1
Awesome job with the garden! Next year and each year after it's gonna be better! Like anything else experience produces better. I chuckled when you mentioned your jalapenos. My Dad said it like you did! Love it! Like Spock said it: "live long and prosper".
1
I like it when YouTubers do the "this and that" videos. I tend to have a shorter attention span as I get older. It's like I don't have time to waste on drawn out subjects. Get in and get it done! I'm with you on the way you work smart with a back up plan. You're moving right along! I understand about the dry conditions. Our apple trees don't have any fruit on them and the few other things we planted seemed to fail, too. Even the flowers my wife planted died. We're going to have raised garden beds when we get serious with the garden stuff. Seems like only weeds thrive through the dryness. Thanks for sharing the grey water system. I'm going to try that with my little off-grid shack I'm building. Wife doesn't want it anywhere near where we're going to build our new house. I'll quit with my rambling. Thanks for sharing the information and experience with us! Good luck with your plans!
1
Just think also makes it difficult to finish the outside corners.
1
You have a good plan figured out. Going stick-built is going to cost a lot for a small house/cabin. Maybe you should think about doing it with logs harvested from your property. My wife and I are planning on building our home on our property this year and already worried about lumber prices. This covid-19 situation has the prices all jacked up. Good luck with your projects! I'm looking forward to seeing your videos!
1
He said it was a multi-tool. It can use several types of cutting blades and other attachments. You can get other heads for it to make it an angle drill or a jig-saw or several other types of tools. Very handy tool, indeed! I have one myself.
1
Those are good suggestions. Anything to help keep the cold inside is a good thing. Making it like a conventional refrigerator with a freezer on top and cold stuff in bottom, but doing it just the opposite way. Cold air sinks (as you already know, Kyle).
1
@Adoptedbymydog my wife's 2 sons were too busy clearing their snow to help us. An older neighbor came along with his 4 wheeler with a plow and helped with the end of the driveway where the city plow left us buried. My wife has enough health issues, she could only shovel for a couple hours. She'll be sore for a week. I'm still trying to dig us out. -19 this morning, about -7 here now.
1
Yes it is acting like it's going to be springtime soon! Preparing healthy wholesome food that looked delicious! The way you two work you need that kind of diet. That 4 wheeler looks like a bargain. I'm going to be looking for one soon too. Like you, nothing fancy flashy, just reliable and easy to maintain. Maybe with a snowplow attachment. We're thinking about trying chickens this year. If nothing else for the eggs. Maybe some meatbirds after we get good raising chicks to maturity. One step at a time. You are such an inspiration for people that want to DIY the off-grid lifestyle. See you in the next video.
1
Maybe have some room in the mechanical room for water storage?
1
@TsunamiKitten56 why? We are all saying that Kyle is a good influence for ANYONE!
1
I remember when you added that dividing wall in your cabin. It made me wonder why you would divide your space like that. Open area is much better. Lighting is more efficient and easier to heat. Your flooring looks great! The kitchen shelves are basic but looks good and easy access. Help keep from collecting junk. No "out of sight out of mind" happening now. The storage cabinets are also a good idea. You've been busy! I wouldn't be able to keep up with your projects. The well is a life changer for sure. I look forward to your videos.
1
Congratulations Kyle! That was so nice of the man to help you out with that building and all that lumber and materials! He was definitely nicer than most people that are just out to make a buck! That stuff didn't cost you anything but labor and saved him from the cost of hauling it to the dump and the expense of landfill charges. Sounds like a real "win-win" deal to me! No matter what you do with it, it will not be wasted! You're a creative young man with a plan and a great future! You and Cierra are going to have a great homestead together! Take care and good luck to you!
1
It's good to see what you're accomplishing on your homestead. I also appreciate that you are selective on your product reviews. Those solar powered generators had my interest peaked. Other products you probably rejected wouldn't fit your channel. You seem to be much wiser than others your age. That's because you THINK! You have common sense. Thanks for sharing your story! Stay safe and have a great day!
1
@KYLESCABIN that's a pretty steep pitch, but I understand it for snow removal.
1
Looks good! The only concern I have would be even heating in the winter. I'm sure you already considered your options. I have full confidence in you.
1
Bravo! Great job, Kyle! You're just bangin' away with this project! You're doing what I wish I did at your age. Building a dream. I sorta did it, but mine was building a dream car. Car is gone now, but your cabin will last longer than any car would! I hope you inspire more young people to invest in their future like you're doing. It might be a little cabin, but it's a lot better than any apartment a person could rent. It's yours and it's rent free! And you don't have to worry about what the neighbors think. Great job! I look forward to seeing your videos!
1
Going with an all propane stove will uncomplicate your cooking tasks. Not a big stove but not a big family to cook for (yet). Going to work out fine. As far as the syrup making goes that can be a chore in itself. So rewarding though. More good ideas you are tackling for us to witness. You're a very creative person. I look forward to your videos.
1
Enjoy the good weather while you can! More snow is coming! Winter just won't give up here in northern Minnesota! I thought I'd be doing some of my outdoor projects this week but I've got snow to clear. While you had your window break, I had my gas tank rust out and had to replace that. Thank goodness I got it done before this snow came! It is supposed to start warming up in the next few days and then stay snow free. Thanks for sharing the information and experience with the old chainsaw. My Poulan I bought several years ago (second hand for $50) is failing me and I'm looking for a replacement. Stihl and Huskvarna are my options, but seeing your old Stihl has me convinced of which brand I should choose. Thanks! Also like your review of the solar generator. Seems like a handy piece of equipment for the off-grid life. Good luck with your projects!
1
Lots of clearing for space for your raised bed garden units. I would probably use some of those felled trees to build another shed or to add to the existing one. But you're right, firewood for next winter is no crucial. I had to do some of my own clearing, but nothing like yours. Only one tree and a worn out Poúlan chainsaw. I really need a new chainsaw.
1
Love the silence. No need to explain how you get things done. Just living a simple life. I want to get my cabin built on my portion of property in northern Minnesota. Get away from all the confusion. See you on your next video!
1
Most tape measures are incremented on each side of the tape (Unless it has both standard and metric) so it shouldn't be a problem.
1
Good to see you have everything winter ready! I still have some things to do, but if they don't get done, it's not the end of the world! Our barbeque grill and a wooden bench and a picnic table should have been moved into the garage for protection. I could be very happy with your homestead! I don't know about my wife, though. She's not a"City girl" but she does like some of the conveniences you don't have off-grid. I'm just an old Boy Scout deep down. Give me firewood and I'll have heat and a way to cook my food. She likes camping out but I don't think she would like that all the time. I know it's a different lifestyle, but I could definitely get used to it. Lots of work, but it's the rewarding kind. May not make you money but happiness is more valuable anyway! Keep it stupid simple and I could make it work. My wife thinks I try to make everything hard because I do things MY WAY! Gives me the drive to succeed! If I fail the first time, I'll try a different approach. I don't give up! But like you Kyle, I think things through before I jump in. I do know one thing for sure, if you never try, you never succeed! A failure just gives you another chance to try. I don't sit around and wait for someone else to do something I could've done myself. Time is the most valuable commodity we have. You're doing a great job with your time working on your homestead with Cierra and Skeeter. Great job! You're such an inspiration for an old man that has been beat up by the world.
1
Seeing you connect your inverter and batteries and then checking things out before you connect to the solar panels makes sense. Limits things to check if there was a problem. No problems, so onward, HO! You can always add more panels if 400 watts isn't enough, but since you keep it simple you probably won't have to. Thanks for sharing the information! Good to see a young man using his head. Have fun on your trip! Looking forward to more videos!
1
You sure don't waste any time! Good lightweight build. Should be strong enough and warm enough to get you through the winter. Small spaces are a lot easier to heat and organize than a full size house. You, Cierra, and Skeeter should be able to stay comfortable without being crammed too tight. Can't wait to see the development of the living area. From what I've seen so far on your channel, I can see you think things through carefully and build your projects quickly and skillfully. You got a thumbs up from me!👍 Looking forward to seeing your progress!
1
@MyFriendlyPup nothing compared to Ohio!
1
The Boss just reminded us of the idea.
1
Idk__ absolutely true!
1
I'm originally from Ohio but relocated to northern Minnesota. So I guess that makes me Kyle's neighbor.
