Damn! I learned stuff I didn’t know myself.
I grew up in soviet Russia of 1984-1990.
My mom managed to bring over some of her bootleg Beatles and Ella Fitzgerald albums, but I never saw bones on them. Lol.
I was probably the only pro-American who hated jeans, because the Russian-style jeans the government sanctioned were so ugly and they made everyone’s butts look like they had diapers on.
In Russia we drank Kvas (malt beer made from fermented bread, it’s actually amazing), and then I tasted Pepsi on the plane to Israel when we left in 1990, and I only tasted coke in Israel.
My grandma, the Moscovite, was so excited to try cola and McDonald’s lol.
I remember when I was a small kid, they said there wasn’t enough vodka available (is that what you were talking about when you were talking about Gorbachev?), either way, the alcoholics in Russia, AKA, most men and a few less women, resorted to drinking cologne. Imagine fat, sweaty, smelly Russian men, smelling of bad cologne, but also of vomit from that same cologne. 🤮🤮

As someone who lives in soviet Russia in the 80s, here’s my take:
Can you imagine that every single prominent person in the paper since 1917 until at least 1980 were actual cold-blooded murderers…?
Sometimes I forget…. Then I remember again.
Not chirniki, SIRNIKI. sir=cheese.
Russian tvorog is the heaviest white cheese ever. I never managed to eat it without getting a stomach ache.
Kotleti is just meatballs - calling it russian is like calling bread French.
Chicken Kiev is as Russia as American “Chinese food” is Chinese. Also, Ukraine used to be part of soviet Russia and all peoples and minorities were forcefully relocated until “one people” was created, anyone telling you about “ethnic minorities now”, should be taken with a grain of salt.
Borscht = we have nothing so we make soup with beats, the water turns red - that’s borscht. 🤷♀️
I ate mine vegetarian with sour cream.
Vinegret - salad made of some eggs, pickles, potatoes, onions and beats that colored it all. It’s just beat-salad.
Make the same without beats and add Mayo - you get the infamous “Olivier” salad.
Most of the time they also add cheap bologna. Not because it’s cheap, but because it’s the only thing that was left available.
I don’t remember eating steak in Russia, the fish were mostly nice, though…
Russian soups are usually amazing.
Heavy soups with meat and potatoes, garnished with fresh dill and herbs. And topped with sour cream.
Blini is Russian comfort food. My favorite ones were both pancakes and crepes, but I loved them with nothing. Most Russians love them with meat, potatoes and mushrooms or berries and cheese in the sweet version.
I actually love herring under a fur coat, but it’s mostly because the fish is salty and it’s covered in layers of beats, again, onions, sometimes grated apples, eggs and potatoes. I actually love it because it has all flavors.
Akroshka is nice but it always gives me a stomach ache. Cold milk.. 🤢
I’ve never seen egg powder, but that’s long before my time.
Buckwheat is my most hated food, but it’s an acquired taste. Lol.
