According to estimates made by the survivors of the Essex, the whale that downed them was approximately the same length of the ship itself, 83 feet, and was killed months later by the crew of another whale ship. It was noted to have been sick - probably dying - from an infection from all the shards of timber embedded in it's head ... the Essex, it seems, had the last laugh .... 🐳
