... Most of us here in the wealthy west have not a clue just how ugly life can be in so many parts of the world. Americans in particular - protected by the wide bulk of Canada to the North, Mexico and the gulf to the South, and a vast sea to the East and to the West - are as secure as they can possibly be, and due to the insulation of a massive Economy & the most powerful Military on the planet. So favored a place in such a dangerous world makes some (not all, but many) folks smug and self-satisfied ... it encourages a certain lack of interest in the problems that our brother and sister humans face, and it fosters a degree of isolationism in some, a sense that the US is and island onto itself ... but the entire Planet is nothing more than an island in space, and surrounded as we are by all that emptiness and cold, airless death, can we REALLY afford to shut out so many of our own kind ?
