Musk grand plan makes about as much sense as Bradbury's ' Martian Chronicles ' ... the BIG differences are that Ray Bradbury wrote his masterpiece in the 1950's AND even he was aware that it was only a Fantasy based upon the much earlier observation of Percival Lowell - who died in 1916 ... Musk, who has had the benefit of the far more recent data of NASA's Pioneer and Viking missions and the interpretations of scientist such as Carl Sagan should know better ! Antarctica, for all of it's challenges, is on Earth and within reach of rescue missions with a relatively easy - if intensive effort. A rescue mission to Mars would be too big an undertaking. Cost aside, just reaching the planet in time to save anyone would be virtually impossible ... despite the fanciful name he chose to give it, Starship is NOT something out of Star TREK, and Elon Musk is more like Donald Trump than Enrico Fermi ! ...

And that is STILL a lot better than the Four minutes that this " Flight " went on ... Having made this comment, I would like to add that I for one don't want Space-X to fail, far from it ... I've been a Space Junkie since the old Mercury/Gemini/Apollo days, so while I'm NOT a Musk fan, I DO want NASA and the overall space exploration initiative to succeed. I'm AM dubious about the dollar-value of THIS direction, however !

... While we're all being so impressed by Elon Musk's latest brainstorm, is anybody considering this : who is going to pay for all the infrastructure that would be required ? Supporters would say it will " Pay for itself " and - given a very long time, it MAY or may not work out that way ... but if it doesn't, it's a write off and - one way or the other - the taxpayer will get to foot the bill ... progress is fine, but we pay for the losses, not Elon.

The rational way of looking at the likelihood of an Earth-like planet, perfectly suited to the kind of life that lives on it is - that's why we exist here in the first place : carbon-based life as it exists here on Earth may not exist anywhere else, but that doesn't mean that life itself can not exist anywhere else, carbon-based or otherwise ... and we will probably never know, one way or the other, because life may not be all that common in the hostile universe we occupy.

... Branson and Musk are essentially IDEA guys, and a good part of that is just building upon and promoting OTHER PEOPLE'S ideas ... I can't say much about Branson, who appears to be largely self-made, but Musk came from REAL wealth. I think that - had they NOT come from families with prior business success Elon AND Don the Con Trump might have been modestly lucrative used car salesman ... :face-fuchsia-tongue-out:... promotion goes a long way, especially when it's SELF-promotion !

The only point that matters is this : when a victim is needed for an astounding con, the American Government - BOTH PARTIES - is always quick to serve up the Tax Payer. ... A funny thing happen last week as I was driving my all electric Tesla long hauler west on I-90 out of Billings and headin' for Missoula. The expanding ball of white fire hit me in the windshield I let loose a torrent of invectives at all them Ruskies an' their mommas ! ... ... After a moment, after my vision had cleared, I looked up to see that my Tesla windshield was a bit dusty and starred, but otherwise unharmed ... And THAT was when I noticed that the big plate of super glass had bisected my torso, and the whole rest of the truck had been vaporized, leaving me sittin' on the right hand lane with Missoula still a long way off. ... Sadly, I'm dead now, but by doggies if I wasn't, I'd run right out an' buy me a bran' new Tesla truck ... I do it in a heartbeat ! ... If I still had them ...
