Minimum wage MUST be dictated by the market. ANY outside force, that seeks to manipulate that market, is fraught with pitfalls. Minimum wage is NOT, nor ever was it... designed to be a "living" wage. It is designed to be a low to very low-skilled worker, so that he / she may gain experience and work up to a higher paying job, that REQUIRED such experience. For the state to raise that wage, is to cause MASSIVE harm to the market, by driving up costs. Those costs, will not only be upon EVERY person in that society, but that person who now makes a larger wage... spends it all on those increased costs.

@veganconservative1109 ... I agree. Of course, the berating you and I would get for saying this in open company, is that we want a return of slavery, but for the young as a whole. The problem is ALWAYS, that people think that legislation / laws can be written in such a way, as to eliminate one person taking advantage of another. As anyone with critical thinking skills will tell us, so long as humans exist, there will be a percentage that is malicious and will indeed screw over another... it is literally unavoidable. . If it ware abolished, there would be a certain degree of chaos, for some period of time, while the market worked it out, but it is best to recognize that it would land close, if not the same, as is currently mandated. It won't go up, because why would it...? It will not likely fall, as this would create a sheet-storm against whomever tried. In the end, not much would change at all, except the feds would have one more manner in which they seek to control private business.... removed from their grubby little laws.

@SOLveteran111 .... True. It is nice to see a critically thinking mind, that is willing to consider information, he / she had not yet considered. I don't mean this sarcastically or by any negative means, rather for too many of us become ideologically bound to hold a position and rather than do what you have done, just stand their ground and reiterate what has already been said. I have and will at times in the future, do precisely that, as we all will, but I do my best to accept new information and express to that person, I need to consider this new info, rather than just blindly pushing back arrogantly ❤

@cainabel615 ... I hear you, but I told myself long ago, that I would do my best to not only understand, but be understood AND learn where / how I can do better myself. I am not perfect and I don't have all the answers and I absolutely have learned a TON of things, by speaking with those whom challenge my opinions. . Of course, since I pride myself on my ability to critically think, I have spent many, many years fine tuning my positions and, with the vast majority of them, reached a point where I have thought this stuff through extremely well. . It is clear that this person fails to understand why raising minimum wage, depending on how much, can be absolutely DEVASTATING to everyone in that society. There are many things not taught in our "education" system today and the one thing the Marxists NEVER want.... "critical thinkers". Critical thinking is the absolute enemy of socialism and I will continue to shed light on those who are trapped in Marxist bubble of evil.

@MosseChoker ... Since when was a minimum wage job designed to be enough money to pay for all you mentioned...? ummm...NEVER! They are designed for the first time work of a child (possibly supplemental income) for who has not yet left home and support most of the things they would want to do. . If one does not have enough skills to move beyond such employment, it is not societies responsibility (the taxpayer) to increase that minimum wage, so that you or anyone else can pay rent or mortgage, car payments, food and all the rest. . Now, we are unusually complicated by inflation, due to EXTREMELY poor fed govt. spending, but we cannot "spend" our way out of it, via taxpayer dollars. 100% of al of us has felt the burn of increased costs all over the place, so in such a case, a minimum wage job may be just the thing for that supplemental income mentioned already. . PS> As already mentioned in an earlier thread (may be on my own thread on this page), it is all but guaranteed, that minimum wage will not go down regardless. The outrage would be VERY high and the Joseph Goebbels Propaganda Media machine would be all over such employers like stink on sheet.

@stevexracer ... Agreed, but a separate issue. My point is that the market should be in SOLE control of the wages earned, while observing the human and Constitutional rights of the employee. There are protections against indentured servitude and the like, so the market will sort it out. If the market aims too low, they they will be forced to adjust up. . I was a part of a family business for 35 years. I have seen first hand, what happens when the state meddles in private companies affairs, beyond human / Constitutional rights. No matter what happens, the business will do what it must to stay solvent or it will go out of business and EVERYONE gets screwed. . Private business is SEVERELY over-regulated and we would all be better off, if the state did not inject its corruption into them.

@stevexracer ... BS. Simply because ther person is a "CEO", does not make them an instant ahole. If there is collusion between businesses, that is a crime and is punishable by law. . If we take your view to the obvious conclusion, than ALL companies would simply screw over everyone and guess what.. their products / service would SUCK, because the employees are not motivated to do a good job. If the guy next door, is paying lousy wages, than guess what... I am gonna pay HIGHER wages, to get skilled workers. When my business is selling more burgers and my place is always packed with customers, guess what... your company is going out of business, so you have 2 options. . a) Continue to be a damned fool and lose everything, or.... b) Raise your wages, so that good people WANT to work at your business. . I was part of a family business for 35 years. We did not last for the next 10 years, after I retired, to STILL in business today, by not being good to our employees. Just stop with the "corporate greed" BS, because "corporation" is simply a tax benefit for some, so it is not this trigger point of a good business turning evil. My workers knew DAMNED well, what other companies payed and If I wanted to keep them loyal, I had to pay them fairly often with increased benefits.

I said that and it does massive harm, but I said nothing about inflation .Do you really think that if Target was mandated to pay $20+ and hour to those who do the most menial of tasks, they would simply EAT that cost? They have only a few options, but here are only two: . 1) Raise the costs of their products to cover the increase in wages 2) Reduce the number of min. wage workers and then create automated check out stands, to reduce costs on the other end How about you head out into the world and actually RUN a private business, as I was doing with my family for 35 years and then tell me how you increase the cost of running a business and NOT increase the cost of your goods / services as a result?

Now, answer me the following and I will chime back in with response to your above question: . 1) What do you think the minimum wage should be? 2) How do you expect the market to respond, if you wish to see it rise? . When you have answered MY questions, I will respond to yours. I wish to have an exchange of ideas, not continuously debunk your arguments, only for you to come up with another and NEVER offer any solution.

@hautehussey ... I debunked each and everything you have said. I was part of a small family business for 35 years, so I have more than a little idea of how wages effect the bottom line and how customers respond when our prices had to be increased to cover them. Wanting a thing to be true, does not make it so. Again.... . 1) What would you like the minimum wage to be? 2) How do you predict the market will respond, should you raise it any amount?

@SgtJoeSmith .. If you paid a total of $144.00 of income tax in 8 years, you are either lying you ass off or cheating on your taxes... pick one. Furthermore, you don't get "Free" health care"! You are either paying for it on the other end, or the rest of us are... you're not welcome. If you have 19 cars and trucks and not ALL work vehicles, than you are gaming the system there as well. . Something is VERY, VERY off with what you have said here.

Please tell me.. exactly how many people are left on the street to die? Now, separate that fraction of .01% and those who were offered or had access to a multitude of rehabs and shelters. Hell, any one of them could walk into just about ANY church and get immediate help. The catch....? They must show some responsibility by staying off the drugs / alcohol they are almost GUARANTEED to be using. . As for "greedy business owners"... I was an owner in a family business for 35 years, retired 10 years ago and it is STILL in business. You know how we got to last all those years... we treated our employees well. Why...? Because they would go somewhere else and get payed MORE, if we tried to screw them over. . How about getting your head out of your arse and stop asking for others to PAY YOUR WAY!

Plain and simple... minimum wage jobs are essentially zero skilled that require little more than a commitment to be responsible enough to do the task and adhere to qualifications of behavior... pretty much it. . A number of people have come into this thread, thinking that sweeping floors, cleaning up tables and taking out garbage, should pay enough to pay rent, car payment, groceries and support a family. They have ABSOLUTELY ZERO CLUE, as to what would happen, to ALL of the prices, of everything in their lives would be immediately driven up in cost. Beyond that, is the number of HS kids who would outright LOSE their job, because automation would increase and employees reduced, because businesses cannot afford to keep them all. . Just like soo many things in this world, Gen Z has ZERO idea how thing actually work, because they were indoctrinated to be Marxists.

Exactly how many towns have a SINGLE person who owns every business in a town? Even if if did happen, the identical scenario as I described above would come into play. If workers are not happy, they will not be inspired to produce your product, so it will SUCK. Those people in town will not purchase products / services that SUCK, so someone will open their OWN coffee shoppe, hardware store (fill in the blank) and drive you out of business. . Wanna know states where everything is either state own or very closely controlled by the state...? Venezuela, Cuba, to name just a couple and they are thriving metropolis' right there! . If you have the answers, how about YOU tell us what system is better for elevating standard of living and turning 3rd world nations in to 1st. HINT: Whatever system you say... It comes down to supply / demand 100% of the time in a free market* / capitalist system and that is by LIGHT-YEARS offers the greatest possible upside for humans to attain a higher standard of living. . One cannot force a free market to do ANYTHING, because if it causes business to lose money (ability to operate and make the effort worth it), they WILL find a way to cut costs and the most sound solution, is to reduce the work force. . * For any moroons in this thread... The "free market" is not 100% free, because there is a VERY limited amount of regulation that should take place, to ensure human rights, child slavery and the like. As it stands, private business is MASSIVELY over-regulated, by bureaucrats who "think" they are doing good for the worker and actually screwing them over FAR more often then not.
