Each temple is owned by the members and not the minister. There is a board of directors who have oversight on all financials of the temple. The minister is hired and paid a salary. Women are in charge of the Dharma school for kids. The ministers have about 10 years of formal education before becoming a minister. Some are professionals in other careers, psychologists or psychiatrists. I can tell you that there have been scandals in the U.S. with both Zen and Tibetan groups over money and affairs. My Bhutanese Lama friend got into a scandal involving a romance with one of his American students and was forced to resign from being a Lama. I am not a big fan of clergy not marrying.
