I read a Sunday Times article back in about 2009 explaining that it's near impossible to sack either a policeman or NHS worker, except in the most extreme cases. So many signatures are required from numerous departments that workers are in effect near immune to justice and therefore get away with habitual arrogance and murder. My local hospital's "Security Service" personnel reputedly use the c-word when dealing with the public as a matter of course.

All power corrupts. Psychiatric hospitals are unofficial prisons, treating incarcerates accordingly. Nurses are interested only in being paid to strictly enforce subordination and rules, other than those that favour detainees in their charge. Plus they really resent those prisoners who undermine the apparent legitimacy of the system, by looking and sounding sane; preferring for you to be full of bluster and perpetually dressed in nightwear.

What a lot of rubbish. Real psychiatric nurses are like those portrayed in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Terminator 2. Coercive, officious prison hacks, who habitually answer "no" to every request.
