That loose shifter is about 1/3rd as loose as the one in my BMW...

Sealed monoball bushings/spherical bearings are the only upgrades I would recommend vs. stock components. Otherwise, you'll have trouble like this. Polyurethane bushings are fine for sway bars, engine mounts, driveline bushings, etc, but not for control arms. Too much heat can build up in them causing failure like this.

I used a very similar kit on my BMW. It made no noticeable difference in pedal feel. The o-rings and caps designed to seal the design made the pins almost impossible to move or service. Overall, I don't recommend this change.

Agreed, my E39 is a walk in the park compared to this. Five wire connectors, four screws, and the headlight comes out. Adjust the aim, done.

The angle measurement - the main reason I bought this torque wrench - does not work past 20 ft.lbs. I haven't seen that noted anywhere. I cannot torque fasteners that require 65º of angle torque because the torque range is exceeded. Frustrating.

@HumbleMechanic Hi Charles! Yeah, that’s what I figured. That’s fine, but there is zero documentation saying that. I wish I had known that going in. Thankfully I bought it at a steep discount second hand.

@aquillelange4128 For my E39, I had to pull the trans and replace the "shift pin detents", and the "shifter carrier bushings." Check out this excellent DIY: https://webspace.ringling.edu/~dplassma/bmw_diy/shift_pins/shift_pins.html

+andrew wright Why not both?

The turbo's buried up against the firewall. Unless you're doing some crazy custom front mount, I think the heat retention and containment characteristics are going to outweigh any slight cosmetic benefit.

To prevent cooking the paint or wiring or whatever's near the turbo for long term reliability.

(Im)patiently waiting for an ETCG Fairmont vs GTI video ;)

Should is the operative word; it seems to struggle for traction. I bet the GTI could hold its own!

I started working on cars about 4 years ago. Three years ago, my parents gave me a small 4-drawer Craftsman tool box for my birthday. It's been an amazing box, even if I have pretty much outgrown it. The drawers are overflowing now, but it still provides me great service all the time!

A high quality tint will go a long way to protect the new plastics.
