  1. Re: cooling system refresh. The E39 M5 water pump is all metal (stainless steel). I replaced mine at 164,000 miles, and it looked good enough to put back in. I wouldn’t worry about the water pump. Replace the thermostat; they fail constantly. Replace the hoses, but leave the radiator alone. Mine’s original at 172,000mi. Replace the fan clutch. You could also upgrade to the spiral blade design of the E53 X5 and E65 7-series; they’re reputed to be quieter and waft more air.
