  1. Are you talking about 4:19? One "mil" is one thousandth of an inch (~.025mm). Remember, this is the States; we're still backwards. So a 10 mil thick clear film is about 1/4 of a mm thick.

  2. With such soft paint, I'd imagine that keeping scratches away would be difficult. Would you recommend a clear bra to the customer after you've finished, or would a layer of AMMO Skin be enough to protect the car during a standard two bucket wash?

  3. +lvcsslacker +Radmarkx Though ceramics are a good idea in theory, in the real world paint needs to move and flow with the flex of the chassis. Because ceramics are so hard, they cause the top layer of coating to be locked into place and create microscopic fissures in the paint. Source: Thr AMMO NYC podcast.

  12. It's an evaluative process. Generally, in order from most to least aggressive, it should be: 1. Wetsand - removes surface texture, any sort of damage you can feel with your fingernail. Takes off a TON of paint/clear coat. 2. Cutting/compounding - removes oxidation, bad scratches (wetsand marks are essentially bad scratches) 3. Polish - removes minor scratches, any haziness 4. Wax/protectant/sealant. Simply polishing this would not remove the damage effectively or efficiently. The damage goes into the clear coat, creating a series of ridges. If perfect paint is like this (A: ========), then damaged paint is like this (B: ====-=). By wet sanding, the high points are taken down level with the low points, so it looks like this (C: -------). A simple compound and polish of B would only result in something like (D: =-=--=). The amount of compounding/polishing to required to completely remove this defect would probably burn through the clear coat in the low spots before it took down the high spots.

When I say Clear Bra, I don't mean something that is removable and re-installable like the black leather-y things that old people put on their cars. A clear bra would cover every painted contour on the vehicle. Look for Larry's videos on clear bras, or maybe Drive Clean's.
