If you do a little research into how Doris Miller got his medal you will learn it was all a lie. In the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor the black press started a massive campaign of letter writing to members of the Navy, congress and Senate demanding that a black sailor be awarded a medal. They wanted a "Hero" of their own. At first they were ignored but they kept up the pressure for MONTHS, finally the USN caved and selected Miller at random. In order for it to not be a total sham they exaggerated what Miller did that day. There is ZERO evidence he shot down any aircraft, Miller himself said he didn't know if he got any, he said he might have gotten one. Miller is one of the earliest examples of Wokeism in the military, giving a man an award, not because of anything he did but because of the color of his skin. It is a DISGRACE that the WOKE Navy is naming a CVN after him, totally breaking tradition and protocol when it comes to naming Carriers. This will be the SECOND ship named after him which is a slap to the face of EVERY Medal Of Honor winner who has yet to have a ship named after him.

The screwed the pooch so hard in that movie. If I was the director I would have made more of a deal that the the Iowa's analog fire control computers were immune to the jamming that rendered the Arleigh Burkes electronics useless. That scene at the end where the soldiers were carring a round down Broadway was moronic. An HE round weighed 2250 pounds and an AP round weighed 2700 pounds. No amount of people are carrying that round. There was a really cool hand powered monorail system for moving rounds between turrets. It would have been cool to see them use it.

You mean A-5 and you would be wrong. The A-5 was based off the F-108 Rapier a canceled MACH 3+ interceptor that made the Arrow look like a toy.

LOL The F-104 never compared to the SR-71. The F-104 was a MACH 2 class fighter where the SR-71 was a MACH 3.5+ aircraft.

As a veteran of the USS Iowa I will disagree with you sir. 16 inch gunfire is only as good as the FO's. In Vietnam the Navy did something really stupid and re bagged powder from different lots of powder into new bags. This led to an inconsistent burn rate and inaccurate fire. There was nothing that could be done about that. That speaks more of the failure of the Naval command and not the guns themselves.

@josephkane825 Those powder issued were ironed out in the mid 80's. We were able to drop a round withing about 50 feet of the target.

Like the Arrow the TSR-2 was obsolete before it ever entered production. The Soviet bomber threat never materialized and ICBM's made advanced dedicated interceptors obsolete.

@juststeve5542 Russia has a handful of bombers. When the Arrow was designed its mission was to defend North America from huge formations of Russian bombers coming in over the pole. That threat never materialized.

There was a United Nations vote to use force to remove Saddam from Kuwait which is exactly what UN forces did. Be glad that stupidity is not a crime or you would be serving multiple life sentences.

@JK-rv9tp Yep, like the century series fighters the Arrow was designed for what they thought combat would look like in the era of all missile combat. Supersonic speeds and missile exchanges. reality set in during Vietnam when combat was still taking place at 550 knots.

You are incorrect, the F-4 Phantom made its first flight less than 2 months after the Arrow. The Phantom was LIGHT years better than the Arrow. Hell even the F-106 Delta Dart was far better than the Arrow. The reality of the Arrow and the mythology of the Arrow are two different realities.

As to why cassette overtook 8-Track I feel like the size of the medium played a big part. You could fit a lot more cassettes in your glovebox than 8-Tracks. I used to have a case I kept in the back seat that could hold 40 cassettes. and it was small and easily manageable.

Sir, please do not comment on things you have no idea what you are talking about. I am a veteran of the USS Iowa and I was there that day. Clay Hartwig was my best friend and the silly notion that he had something to do with it was 100% fabricated by the NIS. First Clay was the primer man in the center gun of turret two that day, he was no where near the powder bags. Second I had Breakfast with him that morning, he was not depressed, he was in good spirits and was excited about his upcoming change of duty station. Third the entire story about Clay having made advances towards a sailor and having those feelings rebuked is 100% made up, I know this because I was the sailor Clay was supposed to have made advances too. I was interrogated by the NIS for hours on end, days turned into weeks, and eventually into months. The NIS broke me in their interrogations and I signed a false confession just to get them to leave me alone. The very next day I told them it was bullshit and that it was not true but they leaked that confession to the press anyways. I remember the first time I was questioned by the NIS the very first thing they said was we know Clay did it. That was before any of the testing, investigation, anything. The NIS was looking to blame someone for the explosion and they chose Clay because he had his SGLI naming another sailor as his beneficiary that was it. Lastly GMG2 Lawrence who was the gun captain that day could be heard communicating with main plot, he kept telling them they were not ready and that they had a problem that they were trying to correct. Petty Officer Hanyecz was looking into the center gun room from the booth through the porthole said oh my god I see a flash. Seconds later he yelled out to Petty Officer Mortenson in our turret....Mort.....Mort and that was it. There was no sabotage involved at all. It was an accidental over ram of the powder bags and it set one of them off.

The problem is there are no armor piercing bombs or anti ship missiles. So ASM's like the Harpoon would hit the armored belt and explode harmlessly.

@FireDude13 I was a gunners mate on the Iowa and we had no such shells. We hade the 2250 pound High Capacity round and the 2700 pound AP projectile all unguided.

I have been playing World of Warships since closed beta. I am also a history nut and a USN veteran. I served on the USS Iowa BB61 as a gunners mate in 16-inch turret one in 1989. So I am an old fart too lol. Look me up in the game under the name Belthorian, I would gladly play some games with you.
