Educate yourself first. Assault weapons can be ANYTHING but in this case assault rifle is a scary term liberals like throwing around to scare the ignorant. The correct term you are looking for is Semi Automatic Rifle and they have been around since the early 1900's. We need to ask ourselves where we went wrong as a society that makes people do these kinds of things.

This is what frustrates me the most with the gun control crowd. Statistically semi automatic rifles account for just less than 3 percent of firearms fatalities. More people are bludgeoned to death every year than are killed with semi automatic rifles. Banning them will make no statistical difference in gun crime in America. HANDGUNS are the issue they are responsible for about 90% of all firearms fatalities and are responsible for more than 90% of non lethal gun crime. If you REALLY want to make a change on gun violence in America start restricting handgun sales to outright banning them for civilian use.

@ladymondegreen Thank you for your civil reply. First get rid of the term Assault Rifle. That is just a scary word the left uses to scare people and demonize a specific class of weapons called semi automatic rifles. Civilians can not own assault rifles without special permits. Second, semi automatic rifles have been around since the early 1900's why did mass shootings not become a thing until Columbine? Where have we gone wrong as a society that has made people seem so much more willing to take this path of action that they so rarely did in the past? I think it will be interesting to see if the shooter was being treated with Anti Depressants, nearly all mass shooters have one thing in common they were all being treated or had been recently treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitor type anti depressants. I do not think that is a coincidence. I would also say our society as a whole has gotten so soft that these kids can't seem to handle ANY adversity. The days of safe spaces, participation trophies and coddling our children is probably doing them far more harm in the long run. I also think Social Media plays a large part. Back in my day I was bullied every day at school but after school I was safe in my house. Today there is no unplugging from the negativity you are bombarded by it 24/7. I remember last year I was working from home and spent a ton of time on Social media and between COVID and Politics it was ALL negative and I got so depressed for a few weeks I didn't want to get out of bed. I decided to eliminate Facebook, Twitter from my life and I am a much happier person for it. Semi Automatic rifles are a symptom not the disease. You don't cure the disease treating a symptom.

@ladymondegreen Just to be fair, I am all for extensive background checks for ALL firearms. Nobody should be able to buy ANY kind of firearm without background checks. I am also for mandatory training EVERY year in order for you to keep your license up to date. I am also for mandatory gun safe ownership as a requirement for owning firearms. If you can't afford to secure your weapon than you probably shouldn't own one.

@Spartan11KIA There are certainly white supremacists but their numbers have shrunk so much that they couldn't fill up a basketball arena. The numbers of white supremacists has shrunk by 99% since the early 1900's. Now claiming the country is set up somehow for white supremacy is just something self hating white liberals and black people cling to as the magical elixir that can explain why black people are doing worse than EVERY ethnic group on the planet. In America TODAY you have NOBODY to blame if you are not where you want to be in life but yourself. 99.9% of the people don't give a crap what your skin color is.

@Spartan11KIA The most convincing argument that white supremacy is a crutch is the many conversations I have had with highly educated African professionals who have moved here. Their outlook on America is totally different. Another example of the CULTURE problem within the black community is how education is undervalued. In a recent survey among you black kids on what do you want to be when you grow up over 90% said a rapper or a pro athlete. Again poor parenting is setting these kids up for failure. Another example of a CULTURE problem is within the black community you have to vote democrat, you have to speak a certain way, dress a certain way and behave a certain way or people will say you are trying to act white. That behavior alone has done more damage to the black community than white supremacy ever could.

@Spartan11KIA If you track every measurable for success in society the black community has been the hardest hit since the war on poverty began. Have you ever heard the phrase beware of white liberals bearing gifts? Before the social support systems were in place in the1960's there were more black doctors and lawyers graduating from black colleges than there are today. The social support systems have encouraged dependency on the Government. They have accelerated the destruction of the Black nuclear family by giving a financial incentive for having children out of wedlock. Since the war on poverty began the Government has spent over a trillion dollars on poverty without ANY MEASURABLE results. That is the very definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. As a conservative I am all in favor of changing our social support systems and investing that money into job training programs. College tuition for people below the poverty line. Business loans to people under the poverty line to help them start their own businesses. Paying bonuses to people below the poverty line that get married and live together.
