The B-21is projected to cost 550 million per aircraft, about 1/4 of what a B-2 cost.

@bradclawsie Because ALL of those programs were relying on a lot of technology that didn't exist when they were originally designed. SO their development cycle dragged out and costs mounted when the technologies took much longer to develop than expected. The B-21 was designed with all off the shelf technology. There is no development cycle.

Roborav D Some B-52's will be kept flying and will even have new engines to replace their ancient turbojets. Why you ask? Cost, the B-52 costs less per man hour to fly than any of the other bombers and by quite a bit.

Roborav D It comes down to cost, the B-52's are cheap to ply and maintain compared to the B-1 and B-2.

There will be no emerging tech with the B-21 it was designed with all off the shelf technology to avoid the costly technology development cycles. The F-35 debacle really woke up the military on how they acquire new systems. Gone are the days of closed proprietary systems like the F-22, now everything has to be open architecture so upgrades can be rapidly developed by multiple sources and implemented rapidly.

Roborav D The B-2 first flew in the late 80's are you aware how much technology has advanced since then? It will look similar to the B2 because the shape of the B2 is very effective against low frequency radars as well as high frequency.

The B-21 will replace the B-2 and the B-1 which will be retired to save massive amounts of money. It will also replace some of the B-52's.
