Shouldn't have taken anyone by surprise. Putin has been warning for years against NATO encroachment on the East; asking for assurances that Ukraine would not be made a member state. NATO should either have guaranteed that Ukraine would never be a member state or agreed to its immediate full membership and protection under the NATO umbrella. Either way Putin would have been very unlikely to have invaded Ukraine. The West took neither course, so he waited till Trump had gone and the weak woke idiots were in charge and crossed that border.
