  10. In other words, you're desiring the best ... a 3rd generation 4Runner. Shoot for the 96 - 00 model years. Know ahead of time that all Limited models have an automatic transmission. But if automatic transmission is what you want, shoot for 2001 and 2002 models because they are all automatics regardless of Limited or SR5 trim. .. and they're the newest. But if 5-speed manual is your thing, shoot for any model years 96 - 00.

  11. Not surprising since all Toyota pickups and 4Runners had that style parking brake handle from the late '60s to 1995. Tacomas kept it until 2004, while 4Runners ditched it by 1996. *And a 1985 Toyota pickup was just a pickup, not a Tacoma. Hilux in Japan, just pickup everywhere else.

  19. Most 1st gen Tacomas that I see are usually pretty beat up, but once in a great while I see one in really nice shape. In comparison, most 3rd gen 4Runners that I see are usually kept pretty, and only once in a while do I see a beat up 3rd gen.

  20.  @efil4kizum  Not really. And another thing about wanting a 5-speed. They're rare. Like maybe 30% of 3rd gens still on the road rare. And not all of that 30% is up for sale. Which is why I remain thankful that I finally got my 4×4 5-speed 3rd gen five years back. Even more rare in 3rd gens, it's also the 3RZ-FE 4-cylinder with power everything.

  24. I love how most people are dumb as mud when it comes to miles. I try to explain 12k miles per year as an average multiplied by exactly how old the vehicle is, but they still say "oh hella miles!" 27.5 year old vehicle × 12,000 = 330,000 miles, which means 330k is actually average for the age of the vehicle, but they still don't understand. They just want a 25 year old vehicle with an odometer reading of 180k or something. I think they would prefer rolled back odometers instead.

  27. Pre-fill the filter if it keeps you feeling warm and fuzzy. If not, then yes, it will reduce the lifetime of an engine by about 10 miles over the course of 400k miles.

  39. ​​​​​​​​ @JAY-97-97  Many 96 - 98 3rd gen 4Runner owners do the cupholder mod to be like the 99 - '02 3rd gens. They say the cups are in the way of their precious HVAC switches, but that location has never bothered me. I reach around a tiny bit if I need to and it's no biggie.

  56. They all ask a lot more than $6k (kbb 1997 V6 4×4) for one in good shape with the V6. In my area the 1st gen Tacomas in the best shape are priced at or around $15k.

And the selling / buying populace also values 1st gen Tacomas over 3rd gen 4Runners. Not sure why when both are nearly mechanically identical. I guess Toyota pickups are rarer and more sought after than Toyota SUVs.

Online forums say diff drop spacers are only 1" thick and they actually only lower the front diff by half of that amount (half an inch) It also only seems necessary to do if the front-end has been raised a full 3 inches from stock height to begin with. So no, it doesn't "make the CV axles perfectly straight!" - as you put it.

  90. Well, kbb value doesn't pertain to older Toyota vehicles. What they CAN BE SOLD FOR is their real value. In my area, the cleanest 1st gen V6 Tacomas are priced around $15k, while the kbb value is only $6k. And it's nearly the same scenario for V6 3rd gen 4Runners, except the cleanest ones are priced between $10k to $15k (with a few jokers sometimes asking $20k+ Hope this answers your question.
