@james-t1l3e haha. That's what mine is. Desert Dune Metallic paint with Lavender Steel Metallic painted bumpers.

I am also the third owner of my 3rd gen 4Runner. Bought in 2019 for $4,400 in great condition. Changed every fluid and gear oil, new entire exhaust, etc. Runs puuuurrrrfect. Oh, just hit 330,000 miles.
4
This one is also an SR5. Not basic, mid-tier.
4
@mattandshelleymccool4753 do a block test yourself (detects carbon monoxide in the cooling system) carbon monoxide meaning exhaust gases. If the blue fluid turns yellow you're screwed.

96 and 97 4Runners with a Lavender Steel Metallic paint job were somewhat rare (or for 98 models, renamed Cool Steel Metallic) After 98 models they discontinued that paint code. I like that color so I had my front and rear bumpers repainted from their original dark gray to Lavender Steel Metallic.

Same here at 330,000 miles

Cool story. If you had used the internet and found out about the external transmission cooler modification you would still own that sweet 3rd gen.

@arthurdardalis thank you for your clarification, Arthur.

My 4Runner is from Tahara circa October 1996.
2
... as I continue enjoying my 5-speed, four-wheel drive, 3RZ 4-cylinder 1997 4Runner.
2
@donnerjacob567 you are correct, as in.. "It's been destroyed" meaning "It has been destroyed". You actually threw me for a loop on that one.
2
It's more of a crime that Toyota hasn't made a real 4Runner since 2002.
2
@billybongthorton420 actually, ALL 3rd gen 4Runners were manufactured in Japan. You're thinking of 2003 forward.
2
@mattandshelleymccool4753 and passing the block test doesn't rule out a cracked head or blown head gasket. It's only a 50% happy moment if you pass that test. To go the full mile you need to perform a cooling system pressure test. Order a pressure tester and follow the directions. And don't break the bank on it. 80 for one is enough.
2
MAF sensors have grams per second specs that can actually be tested. Why isn't that mentioned besides checking calculated load?
1
How so? The low mileage? It's a common SR5 with automatic transmission. Your use of "unicorn" differs from mine.
1
Toyota HiLux Surf is just the name in Japan for 4Runner.. and HiLux is short for High Luxury, because their high luxury is their high reliability.
1
nah. It has the common automatic transmission. Calm down.
1
yeah, I was wondering about that too..
1
True. From about 1980 to 2004.
1
You mean like the 1999 that sold there yesterday for $40k? Unreal.
1
Because they were designed to last beyond half a million miles with proper, routine maintenance, not for gas mileage or racing.
1
Ahmed won't be impressed by your crappy old 1st gen 4Runner.
1
@truthserum5310 noooooo! 😭
1
Pay the $870 the dealerships want for a MAF sensor (salvaging one from a wrecking yard isn't possible because they remove the engines and related components) If you can't find a used OEM one online, and you're not willing to dump $870 to a stealership, then order an aftermarket Hitachi one.

A side mirror from O'Reilly's for 3rd gen 4Runners?
1
@Melody666Nikki it had to have been aftermarket. Toyota discontinued 3rd gen 4Runner side mirrors. I commented about this on this video. So does the mirror glass vibrate from the wind when you go over 50 mph?
1
Yeah that pretty much sums it up.

Air up the tires to maximum PSI before storing. Also change the oil and filter before storing. Also pull the dome fuse and take it with you before storing. Also if not indoors, cover the vehicle with a tie-down car cover. Also put a cover on the ground under the vehicle if it's parked on grass. When removing from storage immediately run the air conditioning and change the oil and filter again. Edit: might want to also store with only a quarter of a tank of gas in it. And when pulling from storage I would drop a can of gumout at the bottom of the tank and then fill it with fresh fuel.
1
@DylanL69 nah.
1
Proof?
1
You just made 3rd gen 4Runners sound horrific. By the way, your '99 was better than your '23.
1
@thatoneotherotherguy people wouldn't replace the lower ball joints approximately every 80,000 miles. It's both an owner maintenance flaw and a design flaw.
1
@thatoneotherotherguy you have a real problem with 3rd gen 4Runner lower ball joints, huh? You must have let one completely blow out on your '99 by your own ignorance or apathy.
1
@thatoneotherotherguy the pink milkshake is only with automatic transmission 3rd gen 4Runners, which admittedly, about 80% of 3rd gen 4Runners have automatic transmissions. It's more your fault for not purchasing one with a manual transmission, or if you just had to have an automatic transmission, then you should have installed an external transmission cooler.
1
@thatoneotherotherguy talk about blow everything out of proportion concerning 3rd generation Toyota 4Runners. I have never heard anyone whine so much about that generation. And no, manual transmission 3rd gen 4Runner do not drive like a dump truck transmission. Not even close bud.
1
@jimmurray8483 barely over 200k miles is low for an SUV that's 22 to 29 years old. 12,000 miles a year is average annual miles. So wanting $10,000 for it really isn't too.. wild.
1
Oh crap. A blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. 😢
