The problem is, France has one of the highest life expectancy in the world, it's also got one of the lowest pension retirement age and if I'm not mistaken, don't the French work fewer hours?
When you put it all together, it makes France less competitive on the world stage, it also very expensive on the tax system because people living longer and retiring earlier, the system has to support that, it also means less tax revenue coming in and if the current system continues, it's likely going to put a much bigger burden on the French taxpayers, especially the young over the coming decades.
Reforms are clearly needed, but these kinds of things are always going to kick up a stink with the people, and usually the only way around that is to do these things very slowly over a long time, but I do think change is needed, otherwise France could lag behind other countries.
