I suspect Russia had intentions of invading Moldova but Putin also expected a lightning strike in Ukraine, because Russia is bottled up there, it wouldn't be very smart for him to open up a new front any time soon and if Ukraine does push Russia back, he might never get the chance. For now, Russia is bottled up in Ukraine that it's taking up a lot of their resources and that is likely going to get worse as Ukraine gets better armed by the west and because of that, I think it's unlikely that Russia will want to open up a new front, something they tried at first with Ukraine but were taking heavy losses and now Putin is trying to attack from a tighter corridor. In every sense of the word, this war is going quite badly for Russia and it could get worse for them as Ukraine gets better supplied and trained, hence why Putin keeps threatening with nukes, Putin is getting desperate and really wants the west to stop supplying Ukraine.
