I think the EU and US should try to be close friends but I also feel the EU countries should distant themselves from the US, especially on economic matters with the US using trade as a political weapon.
I also think EU countries should look more at what's in their interest, even if it hurts US interest when it comes to China, after all, the US shows little regard for EU interest, so why should we show any for US interest, and this is also the case for a lot of countries around the world that the US doesn't seem to care about, distancing themselves from the US, especially on the economic front is probably the smart thing to do so as to be less exposed to the US economy, which will make it much harder for the likes of Trump to use trade as a political weapon, it will also help other countries around the world whiles sobering the US down, which I think it's needed as a reality check.
In any case, Trump isn't the problem, he got elected twice after all, the real problem is US politics and voters thinking patterns in the US, that isn't going to change much after Trump is out of power and because of that, countries around the world really need to start looking at alternatives away from the US.
