If anything, it makes it a lot harder for Russia to win the war, winning a successful war is all about winning the hearts and minds of the people, Russia targeting civilians could end up getting Ukraine to harden its stance a lot more whiles also boosting the number of troops Ukraine could recruit.
But we should remember, Putin is a desperate man, rational thinking is going out of the window, this is basically a revenge attack but it serves little purpose and won't help Russia in winning the war, in fact it does the opposite because the moment they start targeting civilians, Russia could end up with uprisings in those regions in Ukraine it's already taken over and if that happens, Russia will have a hard time fighting this war.
Also, all this does is encourage the west to send more advanced military hardware to Ukraine, but seriously, the more Putin keeps trying to raise the stakes, the more the west sends more arms to Ukraine and in the end, if Putin isn't careful, he could be digging his own grave because I'm seeing few options left for him to get out with is skin intact, so just dig your own grave Putin, you wont be missed.

True, Russia can't really complain about this when they've invaded Ukraine and Russia should consider it's self lucky that targets in Russia are not being hit, which Ukraine has every right to attack as Ukraine are being attacked by Russia.
You have to wonder where the end game is in all this but if Putin keeps trying to escalate this war, he could very well find out that Russian cities could be bombed, because in war, there are tolerance levels, if push comes to shove, Russia could directly be in the firing line on this.
As for Putin and his bluffs, the west isn't really listening, every time Putin tries to ramp up the threat, the west sends even more military aid to Ukraine, it kinda feels like every time Putin tries to escalate things, it seems to backfire on him, this could be another one of those occasions.
As for western countries and especially the US, nobody is saying they are angels and have not done wrong, but that doesn't make what Russia is doing right, also, this is a clear land grab from Russia, I don't recall western countries doing that over the decades, it's usually regime change, which isn't great but annexing a country is far worse.

@johnboddie6826 True, I do also think it should help to speed up the reforms needed in Ukraine for them to join the EU sooner rather than later, after all, with everything that's gone on and when the dust settles, it will be bold of any politicians to want to side with Russia in Ukraine and that will make it a lot more difficult for those politicians that are trying to block major reforms because the government and politicians can turn it against them in wanting to side with Russia, also, with the invasion from Russia, Ukraine will feel a lot safer inside the EU, so a lot of the opposition to either the EU or reforms will likely melt away in Ukraine, which should help to being them on track to joining the EU sooner rather than later.
With all that said, the EU will need to do reforms of its own before any new member can join, especially on vetoes and majority rules, I also think more integration is needed in military, foreign policy and energy matters.
But for now, the west needs to continue to help Ukraine in any ways that they can, they also need to continue to isolate Russia from the world and I also think the EU and US needs to go after countries that are profiting on cheap oil and gas from Russia, after all, the west isn't doing all this only for others like China and India to prop up the Russian economy, there needs to be a high price for those countries, either with sanctions on goods or other measures.

Probably pressure from Putin, but I can only imagine how bad the performance of the troops from Belarus would be with how Russia is performing so badly.
Lukashenko likely knows that he needs the troops in Belarus for his own protection from the population, if they enter the war and have a lot of casualties, it doesn't bold well for Lukashenko future.
Personally, I doubt Belarus will enter the war and Putin might have told him to put a lot of his troops on the northern part of Ukraine with the intention of scaring Ukraine, in other words, Putin needs to make Ukraine think that there could be an attack from the north to ease the pressure on the attack that Ukraine is doing in the south, if it works, Ukraine will have to divert resources away from the front in the south which is likely what Putin wants, but on the other side of the coin, it's probably best to beef things up at the north just in case.
