I don't think it would be wise for the west to give anything that is seen as a gain for Putin, any gain, even small gain will be seen as a victory against the west which could embolden others like China to try their own land grab.
The only language dictators know is loss, the west needs to make sure that Ukraine wins and gains its land back, including Crimea and with no strings attached on weather Ukraine can join NATO or the EU.
It's got to be made crystal clear to Putin and other dictators that there is a high political, economic price as well as lives loss for what he's done.
Also, lets be blunt about this, after the actions of Putin and how many eastern European countries that will be fearful of Russia, the west not allowing them into NATO would be seen as selling them out to Russia and in the end, Putin started this war, he's been interfering in the west for over a decade now, there needs to be a high long-lasting price Russia has to face or they won't learn from this which could mean repeating it again in the future.
Also, lets not delude ourselves guys, Putin has been dreaming about restarting the Soviet Union for a while, no way for a second would he accept peaceful terms and if he did, it likely would be to buy time, it's a hostile government, it's been hostile for quite some time and the west has been too soft on Russia, it would be a mistake to show Putin weakness now, after all, the west did that over the last decade and look what that got them.
