Ultimately, what most of the public want is stable politics and a growing economy, they don't care who delivers it just as long as it's done.
It basically means that far left or right parties need to moderate to gain or hold onto power, because if they turn things upside down in a negative way, people will quickly turn on them, whereas if they come across as more moderate and get things done, the public will start to look at them over the well established parties, but in the end, their policies have to be more moderate if they want to appeal to a wider public, unless the public at large become more radical, which if that happens, the country in question has far more problems than just politics and economics, which we've been seeing little hints of that in the US with Trump and the UK with Brexit, but it looks like things have stabilised somewhat and it's not got out of control, but it wasn't hard to see how things in both countries could have got out of hand if the voters were not careful, that would have backed fired on the people.
