@mahive2097 Sooner or later, a crack in one or the other country will open up as new governments come in, but really, the EU shouldn't wait for that and get a lot tougher on them now, hold back funds, investments in the countries and so on, in other words, isolate the countries.
If it really gets to the point of not being able to get anything done in the EU because of those two countries, that multispeed EU that Macrons has talked about seems very likely, because the countries in the EU that want reforms are not going to wait around for these two countries to get their act together, they might find ways of doing the reforms at a Euro Zone level which will leave none Euro Zone countries more isolated.
But let's not kid ourselves, reforms of the EU are needed if the EU wants to expand and they can't afford play to the games of those two countries as too much time has been wasted already and personally, the EU should have been multispeed a long time ago to allow countries that want to integrate more to do so while the ones that don't, can stay as they are, the downside of that is that the core power in the EU will move with the countries that integrate but maybe that is what's needed to get others to get a move on, either way, the EU needs to get its act together and stop wasting time because the last decade feels like a waste.

nigga 🏳️🌈⃠ You do realize that about half the EU gas was coming from outside of Russia and that was before the war even started, now it's likely a higher percentage.
I sometimes wonder about people that make it seem that if Russia cuts the pipe, there is no gas coming in from any source lol.
Truth is, the EU countries overall will be fine, they'll tighten their belts this winter, continue to get gas from other sources whiles using the gas storage.
Also, let's be blunt, Europe has been through far worse than this and it's short term overall, whereas the damage to Russia is long term as they get isolated.
There is also a massive silver lining in all this, the longer and higher prices stay on energy, the quicker the transition on the energy industry to clean energy sources will happen, in other words, the fossil industry is thinking short term profits but that will likely kill that industry a lot sooner than it would have been which will wipe out trillions from those economies that sell that stuff.
To make it worse, countries that buy a lot of energy from external sources could end up with a massive windfall tax every year if they generate their own energy internally, especially from renewables, we could be talking about many hundreds of billions being saved every year in just the EU and that would be the case for others that import a lot of energy.

I suspect if Hungary or Poland were to use the veto to block anything from happening, I can well see more EU countries getting onboard with Macrons idea of multispeed EU and the Euro Zone is probably a good starting point to do it.
The other EU countries that want to move forward with reforms can't afford to be blocked by countries like Hungary and Poland as it's just creating gridlock, so I suspect one of 3 things will happen, either the EU and it's members will get Hungary and Poland to change, 2, they find a way to kick them out of the EU or 3, they isolate the countries in the EU and that can be done in many ways from holding back money from them, pushing companies to not invest in those countries and so on, basically, isolate the countries in the EU so they become weaker in time.
Honestly thought, the EU should have got a lot tougher on these 2 countries a long time ago, nip it in the bud before it gets out of hand because by delaying it like the EU has, it's made those two countries get bolder with its stance, there's a fair chance they would have backed down if the EU clamped down on them much earlier on, so credit to the European Parliament for actually pushing hard on that whereas the Commission have been dragging this out too much.
In any case, I think the EU should put a time limit on the money they are holding on Covid and development funds to Hungary and if they don't do the reforms needed in time, that money goes to the other EU members that need it, ramp up the pressure a lot more on Hungary so they stop stalling and wasting time.
