True, Putin thought that if Russia attacks from almost all sides, they would be able to take Ukraine in a much shorter space of time by overwhelming Ukraine.
Clearly that didn't work out for Putin so now he's changing tactics in focusing on a smaller region and from one side, that could be an advantage to Russia but it could also be a disadvantage as they could get bottled up in a smaller region which could make them an easier target, especially if the west suppliers Ukraine with the right arms.
But yeah, there's no doubt about it, Putin expected this war to be over or almost over with by now and yet he's made very little progress, on top of that, all Ukraine needs is time to be better prepared, trained and armed, the longer this drags on, the more costly it will likely be for Russia and as we know, the west can supple Ukraine more or less indefinitely which is the main aim of this, to make Russia bleed on both the economic front and troop front.
We should also remember that the more territory Russia tries to take, the harder it's likely to be to hold onto that territory which is usually the case for an invading army, so this is very likely going to be costly for Russia over the longer run and this isn't even including the eventual sanctions on gas and oil from the EU countries and in the end, Putin is going to think, was it all worth it?
