They always had a spine, they are just smarter in how to use it then the US is, in other words, the EU is trying to play a fine line with the US and China to keep trade links intact whereas the US are more or less killing their links with China, that for EU countries could be a golden banana of business going forward if they play their cards right. The EU plays the long smart game whereas the US flies from the hip, the EU is also a lot more pragmatic with China in knowing you have to work with them whereas the US is trying to do a lot of damage to it's own economic well-being by more or less being pushed out of China, the EU also likely knows that as the US gets pushed out, that could generate a lot of business for EU companies. There is a smart way in dealing with China and that is with a lot of friends, the EU seems to be playing the long game whereas the US seems to be on self-destruct mode..

Out of all the powers in the world, the EU seems to be the only one making much sense, the US is going off the rails, Russia is playing up to it's old tricks and China is trying to be seen as the good guy with a lot of misinformation, so far the Europeans for the most part are the only ones of the big players that have not gone off the rails yet. The EU is also pragmatic unlike the US, they know they have to work with China because of the size of the market and trade is important on that count, in other words, the EU is playing the smart longer game whereas the US is playing to start a Cold War with China.

Good luck telling that to Brexiteers and euroseptics but you are right ofcouse, the EU does need to get stronger and more integrated, the irony is that the US and China is what will help that to happen.

No doubt the west have really messed up and should have taken action much sooner and should have done a much harder lock down but that doesn't change all the disinformation going around and it's not just China that is guilty of that, the US and countless others are as well.

@meneither3834 Yet the Germans and many other EU members said just a few weeks back that they are prioritizing trade with China, they are not stupid, they know as the likes of the US and UK gets pushed out of China, it leaves the door open for others to take advantage off and you can bet the Asian countries will and it's looking like the European countries are planning the same. In that sense, China isn't really losing as others are filling the void but the US and UK are losing out because they are offering a massive advantage to other rivals in the market place. That doesn't mean the EU trust China or that change isn't coming, far from it but the EU is a lot more pragmatic than the US is and will stay out of it for the most part and play both sides whiles getting the best of both worlds as the likes of the US and UK get pushed out of China. In the end, there is a massive opening for the ones that take it as the US and UK gets pushed out of China, the EU and others would be crazy to not take advantage of it and if they don't, you get bet others around the world will, that is the advantage China has, they have a massive market that almost everyone wants in and in the case of the EU, they will likely stay out of it and trade with all.

@gordusmaximus4990 Trump isn't the issue in the US, too many people assume things will go back to normal once Trump is gone, they seem to forget that the likes of Trump has a massive base of supporters and what that means is others like him have a good chance of getting into power, Trump isn't the real problem in the US, a lot of the voters are the real problem and that isn't something that is easy to fix, hence why the geo-political and economic world is changing because the US isn't what it used to be and likely won't be for some time without some major changes in the way Americans think.

The EU knows that plays in their favour because they know a lot of lies are told about the EU, if everything was fact-checked, it would be harder for the ones telling the lies to get away with it.
