There is another side to look at this, Ukraine wasn't really going places before the war and is one of the poorest countries in Europe, once things settle down, it's very likely that Ukraine will get a lot of help from the west and especially the EU, throw in closer ties, we could over the next decade see an economic boom in Ukraine but before any of that happens, Russia needs to be pushed out with a push for closer ties to the EU and Ukraine.
So things look bleak now but I think the future for Ukraine could look better if the EU extends its harm to Ukraine.
As for the EU and Ukraine EU membership, there are two major problems that need to be solved before Ukraine can join, one is Hungary and Poland backsliding on the rule of law and two is EU treaty change, especially on veto and majority voting, until those two issues are solved, I don't see any country being allowed in the EU as it's becoming unworkable because of the veto as Hungary are proving already.
