Japan was never really a threat to the US because it doesn't have the population numbers which matter a lot when projecting power, The EU does if they work better with one voice, China has a much bigger population then both the EU and US combined and if China keeps closing the gap economically, it would be hard put for them to not only overtake the US but be a major power in it's own right.
Another thing, at least in the west, they've been predicting for decades that the economic growth in China won't last and yet decade in decade out, they keep motoring along.
The only thing I see holding back China is the one party system that China has.
We also have to remember that the US will try and put any power regardless of system of government down to try and stay on top, they did that with Japan in the 80's, they also tried with the EU in the 90's onwards but failed on that one because the EU is big enough to fight back and the US will turn on India if there are signs of them becoming a major power.
The irony is that the US needs the EU onside to keep China in check and China knows that hence why China made a play to sway the Europeans over when Trump was in power and with how the world is going with China, Russia and other powers, I think the EU and US are going to need to work much closer together because as much difference as they've but got, they share a lot of the same values as each other.
