Pretty much what I've been thinking, it would be highly risky of the US to do this and for no real benefits as the European countries are moving away from Russian gas and were already buying US LNG, but if it was them and they were found out, the damage to the US would be massive and long serving and like you said, it seems a bit too farfetched.
As for Ukraine, that seems unlikely because if it was them and they got found out, support for Ukraine would dry up pretty quickly in the EU countries and probably in the US, it would also mean there is little chance of Ukraine joining the EU and NATO, so no, it's unlikely to be Ukraine.
My money is on a third party which would be more difficult to trace or Putin, after all, desperate times delivers reckless actions, even if they don't make much sense with Europe moving away from Russian gas anyway which with the pipeline having issues could speed up the process of Europeans moving to alternative energy sources.

It doesn't make sense for the US to do this, after all, European countries were going to buy their LNG anyway, it would also go against the US a lot if it was them and they were found out as the damage to trust and the US reputation would be massive if it was them, so it's unlikely to be them.
Chances are, it's Putin, the more desperate he gets, the more reckless he gets with his actions, regardless of benefit to Russia or not and if truth, with how quickly Europe is moving away from Russian gas, the US doesn't really stand to benefit from damaging it, nor does Russia for that matter but desperate time delivers reckless actions that don't make much sense.
In the end, it likely doesn't really change anything, Putin has fired almost everything he has to try and get the Europeans to back down on this war and it's having no real impact, so Putin probably thought, I'm going to lose their custom soon so I might as well blow it up lol, it's petty but this is how dictators react in desperate times.
On the plus side, this speeds up the process away from Russian oil and gas to alternatives.
