I think if China does back away from Russia, the west and China should try and put relations on a normal footing, reset them into a more productive path and not antagonistic path.
What's going on in Ukraine is a major wake-up call for the EU, US and China and a lot of good can come out of something bad if there is enough political will on all sides.
Either way, China's economic interest are tied with the west and especially with the EU and US, it's highly unlikely that China would want to put that in harm.
As for Russia, they clearly miscalculated here, they expected the west, especially the EU and US to be weak, divided with infighting among themselves and for the sanctions to be much weaker than they are, China likely got the warning message in how far they are willing to go and in the case of China, it would likely be worse because I suspect more countries would side with the west against China, especially in the Asian region that fear China and because of all that, now could be a massive opening for the EU, US and China to reset relations and put them on a better footing before they get out of hand.

And that is just the EU and US, throw in the other western democracies and that number goes up.
The thing is with China, they've got too much to lose by going up against the west, they likely know that if they get on the wrong side of the EU and US, a lot of other countries will likely follow them around the world.
China as much as they want to help Russia are looking after number 1 which is China's economic interest and the reality is, they don't like the world order the way it is, but they are willing to abide by it because someday they hope to be a bigger player in that order, but if they get too close with Russia here, that could ruin China's plans, basically, China could throw Putin under a bus.

@3mKay The west are no angels, especially the US and UK but they are far better than what the likes of Russia and China offers to the world.
Personally, the EU is the more balanced force in the world but they are too divided politically which reduce what they can do.
As for China, they could be sanctioned just as well as Russia is being, remember that these countries profit a lot from the west that without them, they would be a lot weaker than they are, there are a lot of countries around the world that would love to steal that cheap labour away from China, my point is, the west have options if need be, China has very limited options because it needs the rich markets of the west to sell goods too whereas the west doesn't really need them because it can source it's cheap labour in other parts of the world and yes I know that doesn't happen overnight, it would take time but it's doable just like they are doing with pulling out of Russia.
