This reminds me of the early days of the European Union and yeah I think it could be a good idea if done properly. The African Union was trying to emulate the EU but the problem with that is that they pretty much let anyone in regardless of political system, economic system, status and so on which isn't very effective in getting real change and reforms that would help the people, the EAF looks like it's learning from the mistakes of that and seeing how the EU did it which is a slow process and becomes slower the more countries involved but I think it's worth it. I hope it works out for them but it's early days and there's a lot of pitfalls along the way, as the EU has found out, creating a union over many countries isn't an easy thing to do.

@milan431r The EU isn't really having issues holding it's self together but the EU and it's members are having issues in what direction to take but that's a different thing. As for some independence movements, that's from some of the countries and not the EU, there isn't a single country that wants to leave the EU or Euro and in fact, support has actually gone up since the UK left with Brexit. Where the real issue is, what direction does the EU take in future, that's where the real problem is as some countries are pulling in one direction whiles others are pulling in others, still the EU have shown it's really good at finding ways forward with all it's members but clearly the system needs to change as more members join.

I agree, regional power seems more accurate but they could be a big power or even a superpower if they do catch up and modernize and continue to expand with more members, but that's much longer term and that's assuming the EAF gets off the ground. The EAF reminds me of the EU in the early days, it's not easy to get so many countries together, harmonizing the rules with integration on the political and economic level but with time and a lot of will, it can be done as the EU have proven.
