@Llortnerof Putin likely had to try but it was unlikely that the EU would go for that and more likely if Putin pushed too hard that EU countries would stop buying altogether, that I suspect is the last thing Putin wants so he backed down.
In any case, as time goes buy and EU countries become less dependent on Russian oil, gas and coal, it's going to weaken the Russian economy whiles embodying the EU to get tougher on Russia if things continue like this in Ukraine.
Either way, it's never a smart move to threaten the ones that are paying the bills, Russia has basically lost the EU when it comes to buying that resource which was it's biggest and richest customer, now Russia will try and find alternatives like China, China knows this and will threaten Russia to lower the cost of that resources a lot, China isn't a friend of Russia, they are just there to be used and a weaken Russian has many advantages for China.
