That's true, hence why regardless of what Europeans want when it comes to integration in the EU, the realities of the rest of the world, especially the US and China will likely force countries in the EU to get much closer together, otherwise they will become irrelevant on the world stage.
The simple truth is, the individual EU countries are no match for the likes of the US or China, but collectively, they are, especially if they continue to integrate and expand, that is a reality check that Eurosceptics don't want to hear, but they have no credible alternative that works in Europe's favour.

Stands to reason, external threats are usually a good way to unite people, the threat of Trump from the west, Putin from the east and a rising China are doing a lot of favours for the EU, the ones against the EU, the Eurosceptics don't actually have a credible alternative for protecting European interest, in fact, half the time, you get a sense that Eurosceptics seem more interest in protecting Trump and Putin's interest rather than European interest.
In any case, if the Eurosceptics can come up with a credible alternative to protect European interest, then I'm all ears, because the individual EU members stand no chance against the likes of the US or China, it's only the collective, working together that allows them to stand up to them, yet Eurosceptics want to hurt European interest, in a sense, their own interest in not looking at the bigger picture by being short-sighted and narrow-minded.
