We always see this is almost every country, older people clinging onto the past, thinking it was better, the reality is very different, something that younger generation of people have the advantage, as they don't have the memories of the past, so they don't go through the illusion of thinking the past is better.
The UK is going through the process right now, they cling to the past, which in part led to Brexit, now they are getting a reality check on that.
A lot of people seem to see the past with rose-tinted glasses on, now I'm not saying the past was bad, but to think it was much better than what they have now is short-sighted, but sometimes with these people, you have to allow that thing to happen, just like it did with the British in the UK with Brexit, sometimes reality has to bite them on the arse for them to wake up.
As for Russia, at least before the war, there were a lot of resources that should have lifted living standards far more than it did, the problem is the government and corruption, too much wealth is in too few hands, the wealth that is there isn't being used well, the simple truth is, Russia does a poor job at using the resources it's got, which a big part of the blame goes on the government, which wont change going back to the Soviet Union, in fact, it would likely get worse.
