For me, it's not really about banning cars as such, but giving the cities and towns back to the people that don't have to worry about all the car traffic.
Where I live in the UK, over the last 4 decades, I've seen a transition when it comes to cars back to more walk paths in the city and it is nicer for it.
Cars got to such a point, especially in the western world and more so in the US where it feels like they own the streets, making anyone that's not in a car feel like a second class citizen.
Thankfully, that is changing, especially in Europe where it's being made more expensive to own and run a car, whiles freeing up much of the space used by cars for walk paths, bike lanes and so on, and it ends up becoming a nicer place to visit, but for this to happen, you really do need good public transport and other easy access when it comes to travelling, which for the most part, Europe is doing well on.
As for the US, removing cars wouldn't be easy without some major infrastructure changes and big investments in public transport, they've gone too far in when it comes to cars, where you need a car just to get around most of the time, changing that isn't going to be easy.
