We should remember that EU countries were already getting over 50% of it's gas from other sources than Russia before the war started, and that percentage has gone up and will likely continue.
When you throw in the gas storage they've done, I suspect they'll get through winter fine with just a few protest movements because of the high energy price, but that will start to ease a lot next year.
All the EU countries have to do is tighten their belts a bit in winter, which shouldn't be that difficult to do because it's remarkable how reckless and wasteful people can be when it doesn't matter and how much we can save without it really impacting the quality of life.
What really interest me is not the short term impact of this, because that will pass quite quickly, I'm more interested in the long term impact of this, especially on the energy sector, because thanks to Putin, we could be on the dawn of an energy revolution, especially in Europe because I sense that a lot more countries are going to push much harder on renewable energy and because of energy security reasons, many are going to want to produce as much energy internally, so in EU countries and with all that, it's going to be very interesting to see the energy mix in the EU over the next decade because I think we're going to get some big changes.
