@jopharhautman9716 There is no way the government can stop you, in fact if you are creative and willing to put the work in, you can go off the grid now for a lot less money if you do it yourself.
I don't think you understand the way taxes work, governments don't care where they get the tax from just as long as they get them to meet the needs of the country or lets put it another way, if energy is free, the taxes needed will be far less and lets not forget the money people are saving, that doesn't just go down a black hole, most will likely spend that on other things that get taxes, the point being, the quality of living has improved, you have more money to spend and governments need less taxes even thought they'll likely still want around the same but that will mean better public services.
Beside, I would love to see governments try to stop free energy with how many ways there are to generate it and how cheap it is becoming, it will be fun to watch, basically, they won't tax it just like they can't tax air but I do expect a few to try but that will push more to go off grid, so they have full control over it without companies and governments being able to play games, either way, there are just too many clean energies we can use that are more or less free once the tech is in place.

@jopharhautman9716 Not saying that we won't be paying the same amount of taxes because we likely will but those taxes won't come from energy, the savings we get from not paying energy bills, we are likely going spend on other stuff, that's where they will get the taxes, also what works for us consumers in lowering bills also works for governments and the system, so they really don't need as many taxes but the government being the government will likely want the same in any case which I don't mind if public services get better for it.
When it comes to the tax system, I do think it needs to be more open and transparent, the public should get to see where every bit of our tax money goes, after all it's a public service, if the people could monitor it, it would be a lot harder for them to get wasteful and corrupt with it, I'm surprised the public have not demanding tax revenue to be fully open yet considering it's our money they are playing with.
It depends on how we talk about it as clean energy, if we can buy say the batteries and say solar and wind turbines and generate enough energy to power the house and car for free for say 25 years with it and it doesn't cost much to buy that system, I see that as being a lot cleaner of a system then what we are using now.
As for solar, wind and batteries, yes it's a joke if you go directly to the companies to have it installed, they charge an arm and a leg, but if you buy it all yourself and do it yourself, it works out a lot cheaper that you can generate a lot of energy without braking the bank, also, the tech is getting better all the time so it's only a matter of time before it gets cheaper and better.
As for electric cars and self-driving cards, they are the future as much as some might not like, but they are not ready just yet and the main issue is price that needs to be slashed in half but that will likely happen pretty quickly over the next decade.
