The US zoning system might actually be by design to weaken smaller businesses whiles helping bigger ones, it wouldn't surprise me if the car industry played it's part, after all, if you have to travel more to get anywhere, that's good news for the car industry, it's also good news for bigger stores like Walmart because chances are, if you're travelling more, you're more likely to go to bigger stores than smaller ones.
The end result is that the US as a country is quite disconnected, not very friendly for people to live in and where you really need car just to get around, it's also very wasteful in needing a lot more energy per person and like many have said, it never made any sense to have shops and other services so far away from where people live.
The irony is, in Europe at least, when picking a location to buy a house, services, shops and other things become a factor in where you buy, people like things to be nearby.
