I suspect this is what Macron might be thinking, western troops don't need to be in Ukraine to fight Russia, just being there would likely be enough to free up a lot of troops from Ukraine to take the fight more directly with Russia, whiles Ukraine won't have to worry about the northern flank and probably other flanks as well.
That would allow Ukraine to put far more pressure on Russia in other areas, and it's highly unlikely that Russia would want to attack any of the western troops in case it triggers a more direct response from them, whereas, the main aim of Ukraine is to kick Russia out of Ukraine, because Russia is an invading army and not defending it's homeland, it's very likely that Russia won't want to escalate things further and could give up on Ukraine.
Either way, I do know one thing, either we send more resources to Ukraine to allow them to push Russia back or eventually Russia will end up grinding down Ukraine until they win, we would have to be fools to think that Putin will just stop with Ukraine and will likely pick another easy target in the east, likely a none EU or NATO country, Putin will also see that western resolve isn't as strong as we like to think it is, meaning all Russia has to do is grind through it and they end up winning because we in the west are not willing to do what's needed to push Russia back, that could lead to a major escalation over the long run.
