The actual term democracy is too black and white, where people judge a country to be democratic or not, it doesn't tell you anything about the quality of that democracy from country to country or how well it represents the people's interest.
I think people should start looking at the quality of the democratic system from country to country, look at what some do right and what some are doing wrong, by having a better understanding of the degrees of democracy, maybe people will wake up and push for real change.
Personally, from what I've seen, countries that are more or less two party systems, with a winner takes all and first past the post is quite a weak democracy, so the US and UK, yes on the surface you have choice, but how much of your voice actually matters? Truth is, these systems are designed to group people into two camps, so the Democrats and Republican Party in the US or the Conservative and Labour Party in the UK, the problem is that it limits choice and people's views are not so black and white, worse yet, it makes it very difficult for other views, as in new parties to gain power, hence why it's always the same parties that win in the US and UK, which just goes on rotation every few years, throw onto of that all the money in politics and it's no wonder people feel their voice isn't heard because it isn't unless there's a big protest to force change, which ironically seems to be the only time those governments actually listen.
