I think most of the world was, but honestly, when winter did happen, it felt like any other winter, and yes the energy bills were higher but I don't know of anyone that was freezing, it was more or less normal.
What Putin didn't understand is how quickly modern countries can adapt if they needed too, Putin's blackmail forced European countries to adapt a lot sooner than they wanted to do on energy sources, but they showed they could, and honestly, even I am surprised how quickly the change is happening, energy bills are dropping, inflation is coming down, in such a short space of time, things are almost back to normal.
Then there's the US, I think the US expected the EU countries to buy LNG long term from them, in the short term they will, but we are already seeing signs of how quickly EU countries are reducing its dependency on gas, which is putting downwards pressure on the price point, and it stands to reason, if gas stayed expensive, Europeans would look for an alternative, which I think the US didn't see it happening so soon.

Many around the world were surprised at how quickly Europe adapted to Russia blackmail, but honestly, I wasn't surprised at all, modern countries can adapt very quickly if there is enough incentive to change, we've seen that throughout history, the second world war was a prime example of that, more recently, European countries adapting to Russia gas and oil, which was always going to take a few short years, but that's quick.
Putin on the other hand thought they couldn't adapt and would have to bend over to the will of what Putin wanted, that was Putin's first biggest mistake, which he keeps making many of them, among his other mistakes is the drain on the Russian economy that the war in Ukraine is having and now there's a much bigger push towards alternative energy sources like renewables, which long term is damaging to Russia as it puts downwards pressure on the price they can sell its fossil fuels, whiles also reducing the need for that.
On Ukraine, I do feel that both the EU and US needs to do more in that they need to give Ukraine the arms needed to end the war sooner than later, the help both the EU and US have done so far is useful, but so much more could have been done to speed up the process and bring the war to an end sooner, and once the war is over, the EU can help to rebuild Ukraine.

The irony is about that, there seems to be a big push to marginalise gas and oil in Europe, with EV cars and heat pumps on the rise, we are quickly heading into an electric energy system that could reduce the need or get rid of the need for oil and gas, especially as renewable energy is on the rise.
Threats rarely work on the ones that have the money, in this case, the EU has the money with its economy, Putin shot himself in the foot by trying to blackmail them, that backed fired on Putin because the EU shifted to alternatives from around the world whiles speeding up its renewable energy, the end result, all countries that sell fossil fuels could stand to lose a lot over the next decade onwards, because the push on renewables is speeding up across the world, that puts downwards pressure on what those countries can sell their fossil fuels at and in time could reduce it to such a level that we don't need to buy it, and because the EU countries are pushing harder on renewables, it's putting pressure on the rest of the world to follow, which we are seeing in the US, China and many other countries, that is a disaster for the fossil industry across the world, especially in the coming years.
