@yc2673 It's possible but I highly doubt it, the world has changed a lot since the past, it's a lot more global and interconnected, any country that goes the isolation route would likely be at a massive disadvantage compared to others that are more outwards looking.
The irony is, the US is being more coy on trade deals and wants to reshape them, the EU on the other hand is speeding up signing trade deals around the world, that doesn't bold well for the US.
All the EU really needs to do is combine the militaries of its members or the ones willing and reduce duplications, that would be more than enough of a powerful military even at current spending and at some point I think it will happen as the US is becoming more aggressive and less reliable and than there is China.
The US always want the Europeans to spend more on the military but the US only wants that to take some of the burden off the US for their interest, the Europeans will likely, if the Europeans do combine and spend more, that won't be in the interest of the US and that's why they try to keep EU countries from not combining, hence NATO, which is a relic from the Cold War days and serves little purpose but to protect US interest.
Now I'm not saying NATO should be scrapped, but I do think the EU countries should pool their resources together and combine what they have, that would give them a far bigger say in NATO which is the last thing the US or Russia wants.
