That really does depend on who you ask, I get the impression that things have got harder for the younger generation over the last 2 decades, just recently with inflation and higher energy bills, probably for almost everything.
Personally, I get a sense that things seem worse in a lot of countries for most, especially western countries, but some countries are being impacted harder than others, Italy and the UK are prime examples of that.
Also, I never take much stock in GDP per capita numbers, they tend to be a poor indicator on quality of life and have too many flaws when it comes to measuring the wealth of the people.
Italy needs some major political and economic reforms to clean up the political corruption and to make the economy more streamlined and productive, especially when it comes to enticing inwards investment, without any of this, I feel Italy will continue to fall further behind.
