I've always suspect that easy access to slave give Romans less incentive to industrialized, they had all the building blocks to do it but didn't do it and I have to wonder how the world could have turned out today, would we be a lot more advanced? Would the world be united by now? Would humans even exists now or would we have gone into space a long time ago, so many things would be different that we wouldn't even recognize the human race. Basically to me at least, slaves what seemed like a big strength to Rome ended up being one of it's major weaknesses that likely held it back in exploring over avenues of advancements and creativity.
