Yep, a lot of people seem to forget that countries trade the most with nearby countries, Russia had a lot of what Europe wanted and could deliver it cheap, the only real mistake is that Europe should have had backup options in case Russia plays games, especially considering how Putin has been over the last decade.
But let's not kid ourselves, if this was the US, China or India, they likely would have been dependent on Russian oil and gas if they were in the same location that Europe is.
The good news is that Europe is an advanced economy and can adapt to this fairly quickly and once this winter is out of the way, things should start to ease after that.
Also, it's high time we stop messing about with renewable energy, it's proven to work, it's not perfect but it can generate a lot of our energy needs, especially if you have the right mix of solar, wind and wave power.
Also, I think it's crazy how oil, gas and renewable pricing is linked together, it's no wonder we don't get any savings from renewables when it's tied to gas prices, separate them and that will make it a lot clearer on how which is cheaper and would likely favour renewables as that is cheaper already and getting cheaper overtime.

That's the case for the entire world being shamefully in reliance on fossil fuels and maybe with everything going on, the world can speed up the transition to cleaner energy sources.
I do feel now that energy is a security risk, a lot more countries, especially in the EU are going to push a lot harder on renewable energy sources because I suspect a lot are going to want to generate a lot more of their energy internally, that's great news for the world, bad news for the fossil industry and countries that depend on that resource and the longer and higher energy prices stay, the quicker the transition is going to be as the political and public will is building to move away from fossil.
Basically, in the short term, the EU countries will need to find alternative oil and gas from around the world but longer term, they really should go all in reducing how much oil and gas they need and renewable energy is a good place to start even if it's not perfect, it can supple far more energy than we are doing at the moment.
