Chasing Unicorns , not two years as I doubt the EU would let us back in for at least a decade, they are going to want to make sure views with the public really change before even entertaining the idea of letting us back in and considering any EU member can block us from joining, it might take far longer then a decade, once we are out, we might have a hard time getting back in and clearly it will be on diffrent terms then we have now.
I think the best thing the UK can do now is stay close to the EU and that likely means staying in the single market and custom union, that would make it much easier for the UK to rejoin someday, apart from that, I see little chance of the EU letting us stay and even if the UK had a vote and voted to stay in the EU, it's not a given that the EU would let us stay, I suspect there would be a price we have to pay for the mess we've created over the last two years and I suspect it will be losing some or all of the op-outs the UK enjoys now.
In other words, I highly doubt the UK can just change it's minds and thats the end of it, the EU are unlikely to do that because other EU members could threaten to do what the UK did with no risk as they could change thier minds also, so the UK is already paying a price on Brexit, the real question is how high that price will be.

Trevor Kenwrick, I'm not saying it's fair what the big powers like the EU, US, China and others that have big economic clout can do, it's just the reality of how this world works, the EU and US for the most part make up most of the global rules, laws and regulations for the world and if you want any real trade with thoes market, you will have to abide thoes rules, laws and regulations.
In the case of the UK, it means us becoming a rule taker and not maker as the EU is our major market and if we was to turn to the US, they will have thier own demands which will be pretty high for the UK public to swollow as it likely will mean watering down on workers rights, opening up the NHS and lowering food standards among other things.
Trade deals are not as easy as some Brexiteers want us to thing, bigger players will always have more say as the economic clout allows and this could be the real reality check the UK gets when dealling with big players like the EU, US and China, for the time being the EU is going easy on us but that can change after Brexit, for the US, China and other countries, they want to give the UK hope so once Brexit happens, they will have a better hand in trade deals then they could get with the EU, the UK being a much smaller market plays right into the hand of a lot of other countries around the world.
Suzy, I agree, some politIcian are good but they get overshadowed by the bad ones and as we know, we have too many of them that take up the lime light.
