Let's be blunt about this, Windows is successful because it's preinstalled, most will use what is given by default, to get a clear indicator of that, just look at the Steam Deck, a portable gaming device, designed to play PC gaming whiles using Linux and for the most part, most consumers don't care that it's using Linux just as long as the games work, which a lot already do and it's getting better with time.
The Steam Deck is showing that if Linux is preinstalled with hardware, more consumers use it and what Valve is doing with Proton to get a lot of games to work on Linux as easy as they do on Windows, the same can be done for any other Windows apps.
Most consumers don't care what they are using, Windows or Linux, just as long as it works, most will use what is sold by default and that is where Windows wins out, but Valve could open up the door for Linux being used a lot more if the Steam Deck continues to be successful, because other vendors will be looking at this and could start to use Linux as a default option, especially as more games and apps work on it without any real issue.
Also, it will be interesting when Valve release SteamOS, there does seem to be interest from many PC gamers that they want to give SteamOS a try on their gaming rig, I fancy giving it a try with the aim of migrating from Windows to Linux full time over time.
