It's probably to keep those social programs at bay, I mean seriously, the Republicans and right wing press in the US are always banging on about universal health care or other social programs that would benefit the American people. Basically, the right wing in the US need a bogeyman, anything that's even remotely to the left when it comes to social programs is turned into this communist, socialist debate, it's all designed to scare the American people into not even thinking about any of the social programs that pretty much every other country benefits from, all with the aim of enriching the rich elites at the expense of the rest of the American people, and I've got to say, they've been very successful at it. Microsoft years ago used to call Open Source and Linux communist lol, you know theres some major issues in the US for it to go that far and it doesn't surprise me, during the Cold War, there was this constant message beaming into American minds about communism being evil and anything even remotely like that, this is a problem that Europe and most of the modern world doesn't have, and probably why the US is the only developed country in the world with such weak social programs, the end result is that the American people are paying a really high price now for that conditioning that went on for decades and continues to go on today, especially from the Republicans and right wing press like Fox News.
